The Researched Essay Assignment

During Phase Three, you will practice locating and evaluating sources, composing introductions and conclusions, synthesizing sources, crafting strong thesis statements, and integrating and citing sources. You will compose our third major writing assignment, the Researched Essay.

Note: you should have access to all readings and all assignments every class (in print or on your laptop/phone). This is because we’ll likely refer back to previous assignments/readings.

Week 9 —10/23 & 10/25 ***Asynchronous***

In-class synthesis 10/30

  1. Read Phase 3 Assignment on our Phase 3 Calendar page, and look through our calendar with eye towards work due Monday, 10/30. 
  2. Submit “Researched Essay Brainstorms” to Google Classroom by 745 on 10/25. Mind the readings and videos in that doc. 
  3. We’re going to use the CCNY Library. and Google Scholar (JSTOR is optional) for our research. Explore our doc onHow to Use Google Scholar and our library. complete the accompanying worksheet on Google Classroom by 745pm Weds. Links in our Basic Online Searches doc will also be helpful.    
  4. Read our Evaluating Sources handout, and complete the accompanying worksheet on Google Classroom by 745pm Wednesday 

Week 10 — Weds, 11/1

  1. Find 8 (good) sources and skim them.
  2. In a single document, write a proposal: one paragraph introducing your topic idea, list the 8 potential sources you’ll use, and write another paragraph brainstorming how these sources might help you to explore the topic. Submit to GC.

Week 10 — Mon, 11/6

  1. Revise and submit to GC your introduction paragraph(s).
  2. Decide on and read the 4-7 sources you’ll use for your essay. Have them accessible for class.

Week 11 — Weds, 11/8

  1. Write and submit to GC a rhetorical précis for 2 sources.
  2. Write and submit to GC a 1+ page of synthesis using these sources. Print and bring to class 2 copies (or bring your laptop with the latest draft saved).

Week 11 — Mon, 11/13

  1. Write and submit to GC a rhetorical précis for 1 more source
  2. Add another page of source use. Underline where your thesis appears. Submit to GC. Print and bring to class 2 copies (or bring your laptop with the latest draft saved).

Week 12 — Weds, 11/15

  1. Write and submit to GC a first full draft of the Researched Essay. Print and bring to class 2 copies (or bring your laptop with the latest draft saved).
  2. ***FRIDAY, 11/17*** is the last day to add revisions for your portfolio version of phase 1 and upload to your WordPress site.

Week 12 — Mon, 11/20

  1. Make available your latest draft of Phase 3 (e.g., email it to yourself or upload it to your Google Drive).
  • MEET IN COMPUTER LAB STC2
  • Practice Self-Editing or Peer Edit with a partner/group
  • Begin Cover Letters
  • *Last Day* to sign up for conferences (11/27-12/1)

Week 12 — Weds, 11/22

  1. Revise and polish the final draft of your Researched Essay. Then, write and paste your cover letter at the beginning. Submit to GC.
  • NO CLASSTHANKSGIVING BREAK.
